Outline of course: A short introduction to the philosophy of existence based on lectures delivered by Karl Jaspers, “father of existentialism”, in 1937 after his dismissal from Frankfurt University. Themes include philosophy and its relationship with religion and science; its concerns with the human situation; the importance of rationality and communication to philosophy and the nature of human reality and freedom.
